Nantucket is a beautiful island and unique as a place to live or vacation. But some people create 'islands' of beauty and style just about everywhere in the world. Not sure what the secret is to their success but they seem to do it by caring deeply about the places they live and the people they share them with.

I stayed at one such magical place recently in Ripley, NY. It's called the Schoolhouse and it is indeed an 1883 one-room schoolhouse, rescued by husband and wife team Joe and Wendy Gollintz-Santilli, a local couple, who have made the Schoolhouse the perfect getaway in a wonderful region which is full of surprises including an evolving Lake Erie, the Chautauqua Institution, a freight train with a whistle straight out of the storybooks, and grapes, grapes and even more grapes!

As we live under the curse of 'interesting times', it's especially important to take note of and share the wonderful work of people who value quality and developing real relationships with their guests. Particularly now that VRBO has turned into Vacation Rental by VRBO and not by Owners at all, I wanted to pass on this special address to all of you who will appreciate its charming simplicity and quality.

And here are some reviews from the Schoolhouse's Guest Book:

We are so glad to have found this place, this is our 2nd visit and we would definitely come stay again. Loved the cozy décor and that you have thought of everything we need for a relaxing getaway. Of course, proximity to many wineries is a bonus! We’ll recommend you…but don’t want too many to find this gem!  Linda & Will

Thank you for such a lovely stay. Your schoolhouse was simply gorgeous. It was just the perfect mix of old and new (I loved your decorations!). Can’t wait to come back!

We had a wonderful stay at the schoolhouse. Sitting outside in front of the fire is the perfect way to wind down after a day at the wineries. We really enjoyed the cozy décor and curiosities. Such a unique spot – thanks.

This is a map of the Nantucket Shuttle system called The Wave.

We are minutes from the Fairgrounds/Surfside stop on the Surfside Loop.

From here you can connect to transporation to go virtually anywhere on the island.

And of course, we are also minutes from the bike path.
